Event Details for Staff / Supervisors
The 4th National PASS Forum will provide an excellent opportunity for both new and continuing PASS / SI supervisors to network and learn from other PASS practitioners. The Forum aims to develop awareness of national and international developments in peer learning programs.
Guest Speakers for Staff
Dr Deanna Martin:
Supplemental Instruction / PASS: Past, Present and Future
Dr Deanna C. Martin is the founding director of the Center for Academic Development at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and the developer of Supplemental Instruction (SI, also known in Australia as PASS and PALS). A world authority on SI, Dr Martin remains active in her international roles as author, speaker and consultant. She continues to work closely with the Center’s current director and staff of the International Supplemental Instruction Program. Voted UMKC Alumni of the Year with husband Dr Robert Blanc in 2001, Dr Martin’s work on SI spans from its inception in the early 1970s to the present day.
Dr Robert Blanc:
Video Supplemental Instruction (VSI) and its potential applications in the Australasian context
Dr Robert Blanc currently serves as Vice Chair of the Academic Board overseeing the curriculum of St. George's University which includes, in addition to a School of Arts and Sciences, professional schools in business, medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, and public health. He retired an Associate Professor of the School of Medicine, University of Missouri - Kansas City where Dr. Deanna Martin and he pioneered the development of Supplemental Instruction and Video-based Supplemental Instruction on the Kansas City campus, on distant sites in rural Missouri, and in urban centers as remote as Miami (Florida) and Chicago (Illinois). Dr Blanc’s theoretical contributions to SI include placing it within a developmental framework and differentiating it from traditional models of academic support. Prior to retirement from the University, Dr. Blanc developed effective programs of remediation for medical students, practicing physicians, attorneys, and accountants who encountered difficulty in passing professional qualifying examinations.
Video Supplemental Instruction is an adaptation of the Supplemental Instruction / PASS model that uses a trained facilitator and video taped content as an alternative course delivery method. VSI has been an effective tool to deal with problems of geographic dispersal and massification in education. VSI has potential applications both within and outside the higher education context, such as:
- Rural and Remote Education
- Indigenous Education
- Indigenous Health
- Multi-Campus Universities
Jane Skalicky (University of Tasmania)
Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) - A leadership pathway and its contribution to the development of the generic attributes of graduates from the University of Tasmania (UTAS).
This presentation will share findings from a project designed to evaluate the UTAS PASS program in terms of the learning opportunities that arise for PASS Leaders and PASS Mentors as a result of their participation in the PASS program in a leadership capacity.
It will focus particularly on how the PASS program aligns with another key outcome at UTAS, the development of the generic graduate attributes identified at UTAS as knowledge, communication skills, problem solving skills, global perspective, and social responsibility (University of Tasmania, 2008).
Sanchia Draper (University of Melbourne)
How do students value peer learning? Creating strategies to support multiple peer learning practices.
Peer learning can take many forms and can help students to feel a part of their own ‘collective of learners’. Students take part in formal programs such as PASS or may engage in informal activities such as a study group with friends.
Running a successful PASS program, and indeed any peer learning program, requires a wide range of creative marketing strategies and encouragement. However, despite our best efforts, there are always students who elect not to participate but who could benefit from peer learning support. Is it actually possible to offer peer learning resources that do not have the scaffold of a formal program and ongoing staff supervision? What strategies can be developed to support students who cannot attend formal, weekly groups? Can these strategies then be transferred to strengthen attendance at formal programs such as PASS?
The session will include an opportunity to talk with colleagues to:
- Learn about resources and strategies used by other institutions
- Consider the different media used to support resources
- Develop ideas for resources
Panel Discussion
The winners of the Inaugural Australasian Peer Leader Awards will share their perspectives on the quality contributions of peer learning programs to student learning and the development of a culture of peer learning. The award winners are selected in recognition and promotion of the valuable work that PASS/PAL/SI Leaders from the Australasian region do in facilitating peer learning.
