Student Services

Overview

Student Services provides a range of programs and services which assists students.

Careers Service

The Careers Service assists with:

  • Finding your direction - careers advice and counselling are available for individuals and groups.
  • Exploring your options - the Careers library contains a wide range of print and electronic based resources.
  • Discover your employability - a variety of programs are available for gaining experience in workplace settings.
  • Getting your job - workshops are conducted throughout the year to assist students with their search for graduate employment and employers visit the campus to encourage applications from final year students for employment in the following year.

Learning Development

Learning Development provides:

  • Workshops on academic skills such as essay and report writing and structuring arguments and critical thinking.
  • Workshops on English language for international students - see program at www.uow.edu.au/student/services/ld/workshop.html.
  • Discipline-specific instruction on learning and language skills within subjects - available through Vista, the University’s online learning platform or in classes.
  • Individual consultations on academic and language skills - to make an appointment go to the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), located in Room G102 on the ground floor of Building 19, or phone (02) 4221 3977.

The PASS Program

  • PASS is a program where students work together to consolidate understanding, reinforce key concepts, and develop effective study strategies.
  • PASS consists of weekly one-hour, non-compulsory sessions led by 'Peer Leaders', students who have excelled at the subject in the past.
  • PASS is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding of course material and improve their grades.

SEDLOs

  • Student Equity and Diversity Liaison Officers (SEDLOs) look after the welfare and equity of all students and provide information and referral to an appropriate service for assistance.
  • SEDLOs assist international students with questions which might arise in adapting to life in a foreign culture. They can provide information on a wide range of issues including personal and financial matters, academic concerns, legal issues, accidents, family worries or emergencies.
  • The SEDLOs are located in Faculties:
  • Faculties of Arts and Law
  • Faculty of Commerce and Graduate School of Business
  • Faculties of Education and Creative Arts
  • Faculty of Engineering
  • Faculty of Informatics
  • Faculties of Science and Health & Behavioural Sciences

Disabilities Service

  • The Disability Liaison Officers provide advice on how particular disabilities affect university study and information on resources available at the University for assisting students with disability.
  • Students who need assistance during their studies should contact the Disability Liaison Officer by phone (02) 4221 4942 or call in at the office located on the third floor of the UniCentre building.

Counselling Service

  • The University Counselling Service provides a free and confidential service to assist under-graduate and post-graduate students with personal or study related difficulties.
  • Appointments can be made by phoning 4221 3445 or in person at the Counselling Service on Level 3, Building 11.
  • Although appointments are usually made a week or more ahead, some emergency time-slots are available every day for crisis situations where someone needs to be seen immediately.
