IFP - FAQ for Australian community participants

What are my responsibilities as a participant in the IFP?

  • Make an effort to engage with international students at IFP social events
  • Try to see your student about three times during the Session
  • Maintain regular contact by phone or email
  • Complete an evaluation at the end of the Session

Participants are asked to keep in contact with students for at least one Session (14 weeks plus end of Session holiday period). It is possible for you to continue to see your student for longer than this if they are still studying here.

How will I benefit?

You may have the satisfaction of discovering new friends, knowing about other cultures, learning a foreign language or even travelling to visit your new friends in their own country. You might also gain a new level of understanding about yourself and Australia.

How do I join?

You complete an application form and the information you provide will help to match you with a friend. You will be invited to a welcome function early in the Session.

Some things to consider

All participants in the Program undertake to respect the other person's culture, beliefs, religion, customs, etc. Some students will be more comfortable meeting up with community members if they bring a friend along. Some students will be in Australia with their families.

What if I have a problem?

If you have any difficulties regarding the Program please inform the ICIS Coordinator (icis@uow.edu.au) immediately. If your student is having any personal difficulties, you should encourage them to meet with a University Counsellor or a SEDLO .

  • "I visited students and their families in Hong Kong, France, Washington, North Carolina and Tennessee. I never thought our humble hospitality to our students could result in such a warm acceptance." - Jan
  • "We loved being in the program. We met our student on several occasions - coffee, dinner at home and a picnic day down the south coast." - Robin
  • "Our two students this time were a delight and we enjoyed their company very much."- Lynn
