General Skilled Migration

The University of Wollongong is unable to advise you about graduate skilled migration, however information about the changes and frequently asked questions can be found on the DIAC website: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/books6.htm.  The following brochures, supplied by DIAC, may also offer some guidance; General Skilled Migration points test, Onshore General Skilled Migration visa options

If you are concerned about how these new rules may affect an application for permanent residency please contact DIAC or a registered migration agent.

The National Liaison Committee for International Students in Australia Inc (NLC) are lobbying DIAC for a sunset clause for current students adversely affected by these changes. The NLC wish to hear from international students adversely affected by the recent changes. Please email convenor@nlc.edu.au. Information on their campaign can be found on their website.

General Information

The eligibility requirements for General Skilled Migration (GSM) changed on 1 September 2007. To meet the two year study requirements for GSM, applicants are required to complete one or more degrees from an Australian educational institute as a result of a course or courses that are:

  • registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS)
  • completed as a result of at least two academic years’ study and completed in a total of no less than 16 calendar months
  • that the applicant studied in Australia, while holding a visa that allowed study and for which all instruction was conducted in English.

To demonstrate that you have studied for at least two academic years, you must show that you have completed the equivalent of two years study as registered on CRICOS. To find out what is considered “equivalent two years study” please contact the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) or a Registered Migration Agent.
