Intervention Strategy
What is an Intervention Strategy?
Intervention strategy is a systematic plan of action consciously adapted in an attempt to address and reduce the causes of academic failure during your time at the University. It has been developed to offer you with additional assistance thus promoting future success in your studies.
There are three types of an intervention strategy that may be applied:
- Default: This is an automatic course progress check carried out by the Academic Registrar's Division. A student's status is at this stage changed from active to referral, probation or exclusion. Information will be sent to a student via SOLSMail.
- Negotiated: This is when a student is advised to see their Course Progress Advisor which is usually a Sub-Dean or Associate Dean. An intervention strategy will be decided which must be acknowledged by the student.
- Mandatory: This is applied when a student has been excluded, they have successfully appealed and are then required to follow an intervention strategy.
An intervention strategy should be implemented early in order to increase the likelihood of you succeeding in your studies at UOW.
Once a suitable intervention strategy has been implemented your student record will be updated. This will identify any amendments made to your course status and study plan. This can be viewed by accessing SOLS then viewing your enrolment record.
Am I eligible for an Intervention Strategy?
You are eligible for an intervention strategy if you have been placed on a course progress status of Referral or Probation. If you currently have a course status of Active, you are still able to see your Sub Dean/ Associate Dean or access an appropriate support service on campus if you are experiencing difficulties.
How does this apply to me as an Undergraduate or a Postgraduate coursework student?
The University of Wollongong is committed to providing you with access to the right support. This support can be both academic and non academic. Furthermore the services available are FREE to all UOW students. A successful intervention strategy could help you to successfully complete your studies.
How do I Access this Support?

What happens when I contact My Sub/Associate Dean?
In order to successfully implement an intervention strategy, you should refer to your sub/associate Dean or your Course Progress Advisor. If you are experiencing problems with your studies for any reason and feel you may be falling behind you must make an appointment with your sub dean as soon as possible. The Sub Dean will complete an intervention strategy form and help to work out an action plan that will assist you.
The Sub Dean may recommend one or more of four solutions depending on your specific circumstances. These are listed below:
