National Code Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Please find a list of commonly asked questions about the National Code and what the changes will mean for you.

What happens if I fail one subject and therefore not be able to complete my course within the timeframe set on my COE?

If you fail one subject in a session, you should attempt to complete that subject in an alternative session. If this leads to you needing more time to complete your degree then you will be able to apply for a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) via SOLS under compelling circumstances. For more information please click here.

I am studying a Master of Professional Accounting. How many credit points do I have to be enrolled in?

As the Master of Professional Accounting is an exempt degree, then you will be able to enrol in 18 credit points per session. For more information please click here.

What happens if I cannot cope with enrolling in 24 credit points each session?

If you are having difficulties with your studies it is best to see your Student Equity and Diversity Liasion Officer (SEDLO) to discuss if it would be appropriate for an intervention strategy to be activated for you or for you to apply for an extension of your timeframe under compassionate or compelling circumstances. An intervention strategy may include an agreed program of study, language and learning support, referral to an appropriate support service, academic advice or referral to a Faculty based remedial program and arrangements. Please note: you will need to provide evidence of your circumstances. Details about how to apply for an extension of your timeframe under compassionate or compelling circumstances will be released shortly.

I am only taking one subject in my final session, is this ok?

Yes, provided that it fits in with the timeframe set by your current COE, you can be enrolled in only one subject. For more information please click here.

I have one subject left to complete my degree can I extend the timeframe set on my COE?

Yes, as you would have received course advice prior to 1 July 2007 that caused you to need an additional session, you are able to extend the timeframe set on your COE. You will need to apply for a new COE via SOLS. For more information please click here.

My father is seriously ill and I need to return home. Can I take a leave of absence?

Yes, under National Code 2007 this would be considered compassionate and compelling circumstances. You will have to apply for a Leave of Absence. You must provide original or certified documentation that supports your application. For example, your father's medical certificates and your flight details. For more information please click here.

My visa was granted before 1 July 2007 and I have condition 8206 on it. What does this mean under the new rules?

Condition 8206 will no longer apply to any student visa including visas granted before 1 July 2007.  However, you will have to adhere to all other conditions on your visa. If you wish to leave the University and have studied for 6 months or more, then you will just need to submit a "Notice of Leaving Education Provider Form". For more information please click here.

I have been here less than 6 months and I would like to transfer to another University?

If you have studied at the University of Wollongong for less than 6 months, you cannot change to another provider unless you are granted a letter of release. If you wish to change, you must complete an Application Letter of Release form and provide all relevant documentation. This will not be automatically granted. Your application will be assessed and you will be notified of the outcome of your application. For more information please click here.

I am currently enrolled part time in my final session, if I fail my subject can I enrol in the same subject next session?

If you are enrolled part time in your final session and you fail the subject you are enrolled in you will be able to enrol in the same subject next session. Under the old rules students could only be enrolled part time in their final session once. This is no longer the case. You will be able to get a new COE to extend your student visa. For more information please click here.

If I started studying at the University of Wollongong in Autumn Session 2007, can I change to another University for Spring Session 2007?

From 1 July 2007 all student visas that were granted prior to 1 July 2007 will no longer be subject to Condition 8206. Therefore if you only started studying with the University in Autumn Session 2007 you may leave the University after completing 6 months of study. If you wish to leave the University and have studied for 6 months or more, then you will just need to submit a "Notice of Leaving Education Provider Form". For more information please click here.

If I have a COE for one year, and I have only have 6 subjects left to complete, can I do 3 subjects in Autumn Session, and 3 subjects in Spring Session, or do I have to do 4 subjects in Autumn Session and 2 in Spring Session?

As long as you are able to complete your course in the timeframe set on your COE, then you are able to complete 3 subjects in Autumn Session and 3 subjects in Spring Session. You can also chose to complete 4 subjects in one session and 2 in the other. For more information please click here.
