Changes to Academic Consideration
The academic consideration process is used when students experience circumstances beyond their control which impair their ability to complete an assessment task.
There have been some changes to the academic consideration process that you need to know about.
Changes for Autumn session 2011:
• An application for academic consideration must not be made if you have already completed or submitted an assessment task. In these circumstances, see the Sub-Dean of the Faculty which offered the subject.
• If you are a student with a disability, or a carer of a person with a disability, you should register with Disability Services to manage the completion of your assessments through the ‘reasonable adjustment’ process. If you encounter circumstances unrelated to your reasonable adjustment, you should apply for academic consideration.
• If you encounter significant difficulty in completing a student professional experience placement, this is grounds for ‘extenuating circumstances’ and you may apply for academic consideration.
To apply for academic consideration:
1. log onto SOLS to create a Student Academic Consideration Application.
Applications shall normally be made:
a. in advance of the due date of an assessment task, including the scheduled date for an in-session test or end-of-session examination.
b. on the due date of an assessment task, including the scheduled date for an in-session test or end-of-session examination, or, on rare occasions
c. no later than three working days after the scheduled date for an assessment task, including, the scheduled date for an in-session test or end-of-session examination, in the event of an illness, injury, other serious cause, or extenuating circumstance coincide with the scheduled assessment date.
2. read the information page that appears first.
3. click ‘I understand’ to acknowledge you have read the relevant information.
4. complete the Academic Consideration Application form filling in the details. You will need to select the subject/s, enter the due dates of the assessment task, select the type of assessment task, the grounds for academic consideration, what occurred and how it affects your ability to complete the assessment
5. Once you have completed the application for academic consideration, print it off for your records.
6. Provide any original supporting documentation to Student Central indicating the exact dates of the event or circumstance and the impact on the assessment .
Documentation should be provided within three working days for applications made in advance of the due/scheduled date or on the same day or next working day for applications made after the due/scheduled date.
