Establishment Allowance

This is a once only payment made to you on your arrival in Australia.

Contribution to Living Expenses Stipend

AusAID sponsored students are provided with a living expenses stipend. Stipends are paid every fortnight on the University scheduled pay dates, and paid directly into your nominated bank account. If you wish to change your banking details please contact the UOW AusAID Officer.

The stipend commences from the day you arrive in Australia (as stamped in your passport). 

For coursework students the stipend ceases five days after examination results are released for your final session . For research students, your stipend ceases five days after your submission of your thesis.

Current Stipend Values

Annual stipend values are set by AusAID and are not negotiable. 

Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) $25,000 per annum
Australian Leadership Award (ALA) $26, 800 per annum

Family Stipend

Students who commenced before 1 January 2007 are entitled to the Family Stipend if accompanied by dependants who hold an AusAID dependant visa.

The family stipend is no longer available to new commencing AusAID sponsored students.

Academic Assistance

Australian Development Scholarship (ADS)

ADS awardees are entitled to $500 a session for supplementary academic support in order to maximise their chances of success. Supplementary academic support may be used for the following purposes:

  • One-on-one tutorial assistance
  • Group tutorial assistance
  • English language support
  • Essay writing skills
  • Exam techniques
  • Thesis proofreading (not editing)

Australian Leadership Award (ALA)

ALA awardees are provided with a Study Enrichment Allowance (SEA) of $2,000 per annum. The SEA provides ALA awardees with financial assistance to enhance formal studies. Eligible activities include:

  • fieldwork, included as part of the formal study program
  • conferences relevant to their studies or for professional development
  • supplementary academic support (such as individual or group tutorials or assistance with thesis editing)
  • purchasing materials relevant to studies
  • travel home for a short-term visit
  • subscribing to UOW's library resources (if applicable), prior to returning home at the end of the Scholarship, etc.

Funding is limited to A$2000 per annum per scholar and will accumulate over the duration of the Scholarship. Scholars may not apply for funds in advance from future years.
The SEA is administered by the UOW AusAID Officer.

ALA SEA Proposal

ALA Awardees are required to submit a proposal to access SEA funds, please see below details:

  • Download and complete the AusAID Study Enrichment Allowance Form from the AusAID Student Forms wepage
  • Obtain relevant supporting documentation
  • Obtain written support from your supervisor 
  • Submit proposal to the UOW AusAID Officer for assessment

Reunion Airfare

Reunion Airfare is only available to ADS students completing a two year degree or more.

Fieldwork

The maximum total period approved for fieldwork is 12months. Fieldwork must not result in requesting an extension to the ALA Scholarship.

Students are only entitled to carry our fieldwork if advised in their AusAID contract. Students will be able to access SEA funding to assist with costs of flights only. All other fieldwork expenses must be covered by the student.

For students who require to carry our fieldwork please complete the AusAID Study Enrichment Allowance Form from the AusAID Student Forms wepage and return the form to the UOW AusAID Officer.
