Melissa Nichols – University of Bath

Name: Melissa Nichols

Host University: Bath University, UK

Degree: Bachelor of Science (Biology)/Bachelor of Commerce (International Business)

I've settled into Bath well now- met a bunch of great people, got myself a job and have started Uni-work. Autumn here is really pretty though- all the leaves are falling... I can't stop taking photos (or stepping on crunchy looking leaves haha I love it!)

A few weekends ago I went to Oktoberfest in Munich... was soooo crazy! Like the Easter Show in Sydney. But bigger. And more Germans. And with a whole lot of tents that people get drunk in all day. Apparently over three weeks 6 million litres of beer gets drunk there. I don’t drink beer normally but had to there (when in Rome...) didn’t mind it. German beer is nicer. I noticed I was too settled in Bath the second I decided I needed to see more places and travel more. Last weekend Claire (the other girl from Wollongong University) and I were in Bristol and coming home I said 'I really want to see Ireland'... we thought it'd be a good idea to go... but the only time in the next few weeks that we were both able to go was the next weekend!! I booked it last Monday and was in Dublin that Thursday night!

It's so amazing to be able to just nick off to another country for a few days at ridiculously short notice. We stayed in Dublin one night (didn’t get in till late) and then went on a 3 day tour of Southern Ireland... I loved it!! I did the whole 5 days for $700 Australian including everything which is pretty cheap!

There were only 6 people doing our tour so we ended up going in a minivan rather than a bus- just felt like a road trip! The cliffs of Moher are INCREDIBLE. 200 metres high. Guess who was stupid enough to dangle her feet off the edge!

One weekend I spent in Budapest which was amazing... first part of eastern Europe that I'd had a chance to see... was really different to other places I'd seen. Budapest was great it was really cheap! It's a beautiful city.

The weekend after I went to Vienna and Prague!!! Soooo much fun they're 2 of my favourite cities in Europe. Vienna is incredible!!! Really would love to go back. Being there in December meant that there were Christmas markets everywhere!!! Christmas in Australia is NOTHING compared to Europe- anywhere in December over here is so festive... really exciting!! We spent 2 days in Vienna then caught the train up to Prague. The trainride was pretty impressive- went through parts of the Czech Republic that were covered in snow! Prague was amazing. We ended up doing a guided walking tour of the centre of Prague- found an English one and it was really interesting- learnt a lot more than if we'd just gone places ourself. Lots of really interesting history there too. The buildings are incredible! Unlike anywhere else! Prague is pretty cheap too... I picked up a pair of really nice boots for 20 euros!! Had an incredible time there. Went up to the castle and could see out over all of Prague. One of the pubs we went to had beertaps on your table with a meter on the top! Pretty fun pouring your own beer (and funnier watching the people pour beer when they didnt know how to haha... the top four fifths of their beer was head!!!). After that we went to the biggest nightclub in Europe... 5 stories high, and each level had a different type of music playing... absolutely incredible!

This week is the last week of uni. It's gone so fast! The term here was only 11 weeks but it's flown by!! It's amazing being so close to Europe and just being able to duck over there for a weekend! I can't understand why people who live here don't do it more often!!! I feel pretty lucky that I'm able to and am glad I havent missed any opportunities to do so yet. Only 8 weeks till I'm home!! Still can't believe how fast it's going!

I went to Stonehenge today... was good!

Hope everything is well at home!!
