The University of Exeter

The University

The atmosphere of Exeter was amazing! It was a small enough town that it had a really nice rural “englishy” feel, but with the university there was always plenty to do.

Must Do’s:

    • Visit the cathedral

    • Have a “Devon cream tea” in cathedral square

    • Explore the campus grounds. There are lots of little places that you can only find by wandering around. There’s also a walk through the town and campus that has all sorts of sculptures along the way

    • Go to the tourist information office and pick up info on seasonal events.

    • Try to do at least one “cultural” thing each week

    • Spend a night with friends and wine at the Old Fireouse

    • Try not to go to the same old places every night. There are heaps of cool little (and big) places everywhere

    • Visit the little towns in the area. They’re only a short bus or train ride away, but are like their own little worlds

One of my friends owned a cottage on the Cornish coast about 45 minutes drive from the University of Exeter. This photo was taken on a cliff overlooking Polzeath beach in Cornwall after a long walk across the beaches and over the cliffs.

Travel Experiences

I spent 3 months prior to uni starting working in London. This was brilliant and an experience in itself. I was living and working in a pub which was fantastic, crazy, ridiculous, hectic, tiring and everything else you’d expect! It was also good though as it meant I could transfer from my pub to the Exeter pub, and I also had a place to stay in London whenever I went back for a visit!

I spent Christmas in Germany with one of my flatmates and his family, then on to visit a couple of other flatmates in Spain for New Years.

I traveled around Wales and northern England with a friend from London and southern England with a friend from uni.

My advice for travel would be to do as much of it as possible! Try to travel somewhere (even if its local) every fortnight or so cos your time will go quicker than you think. Also, try to get to know a local with a car!!!

Overall Experience

The highlight of my exchange was meeting my new friends! I made the most amazing friends from all over the world while I was on exchange and I can’t wait to go and visit them!
