International Exchange

Can I afford exchange?

"Money wasn't too much of an issue with the travel grants, youth allowance and the OS-HELP loan. Who would have thought you could travel overseas with money from the Uni?"

Nicholas Hoye, University of Sheffield

YES you can afford exchange!

There are a number of funding options to assist students in studying overseas. These include:

  • UOW Travel Grants
ALL exchange students are eligible to apply for a travel grant! These range from $1000 to $5000.
  • Australian Government Travel Grants
Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible to apply for these travel grants, funded by DEEWR, which can be worth up to $5000.
  • OS-HELP
The Australian Government is offering eligible undergraduate students a loan of more than $5,000 per session of overseas study! (max two sessions)
  • Youth Allowance
Many students are eligible to receive Youth Allowance or Austudy payments while on exchange. Visit http://www.centrelink.gov.au/ for further information (follow the links to the Overseas section of the website).

"Start saving for exchange now. It is honestly a once in a lifetime opportunity and you can't let money make you miss out on it. I will never ever regret what i spent on exchange"

Emma Phillips, Uppsala University

Other Funding Options

  • External Scholarships
Some students receive scholarships from community groups, local council, or the government of your host country. Search everywhere you can!
  • Personal/Student Loans
There are a number of banks in Australia offering personal loans to students. Contact your bank for further information.
  • Working Overseas
While you cannot rely on working overseas to cover the costs associated with studying overseas, some students work to increase their spending money! Just ensure that you comply with any visa restrictions.
  • Working/Fundraising at Home
These could include savings from a part-time job in Australia before your exchange or your own fundraising efforts.
