Items permitted in exams

These guidelines apply in all exam venues at all campuses.

Items you will need to provide

You are expected to bring the following items to each of your exams:

Photo ID

This can be your student ID card, a current driver licence, or a current passport.

If you have forgotten your ID on the day of the exam, in Wollongong you can go to Student Central in Building 17 for assistance, and at other campuses you can ask for assistance from the Campus staff.

Stationery

You should bring any pens, pencils, erasers, rulers and other drawing instruments you may need for your exam. Note that if you will be answering a multiple-choice paper you will need to bring a pencil and an eraser.

If you forget any stationery items you will not be permitted to borrow from other students once the exam has begun. Exam supervisors do not have spare stationery items available for student use - this decision has been made to ensure that all students are treated equally in exams.

Items you may be permitted to use

You may be permitted to use additional aids for a particular exam, for example reference material including textbooks and notes, and calculators.

If this is the case, your examiner must have advised you in advance of which items you can use, and you will be able to check this on the exam timetable, and on the header page of your exam paper.

Reference materials

Unless your examiner has specified otherwise in the subject outline, you are able to have any notations, markings, underlines, highlights and tabs on any textbooks or other reference material permitted in the exam.

Similarly, unless your examiner has specified otherwise in the subject outline, you may use UOW library books instead of your own copies of texts.

Calculators

If you are permitted to use a calculator in your exam, you must use an 'approved calculator'. An 'approved calculator' is a calculator which has been approved for use in exams by a) meeting the eligibility criteria and b) being marked for use with the UOW tamper-evident and non-transferrable label. You are to remove the case or cover from your calculator before taking it into the exam room.

Items you are permitted to bring

You will be able to bring the following items to your exams.

Valuables

Purses, wallets, keys and glasses cases must be contained in a clear zip-lock bag no larger than A4 size and stored under the desk. Zip-lock bags are provided at all exam venues.

Mobile phones

Phones must be switched off (i.e. in airplane mode with no accessibility to a network), contained in a zip-lock bag no larger than A4 size and stored under the desk. Zip-lock bags are provided at exam venues. If your mobile phone is found in your pocket during the exam, it  will be confiscated and the matter treated as academic misconduct.

Water

You may bring water, in a clear colourless plastic bottle with a lid. The label must be removed. Water coolers are provided in exam venues so that you can refill your bottle during the exam.

Lollies

You may bring lollies, but no chocolate or nuts in consideration of your fellow students. Lolly wrappers must be removed, and lollies contained in a clear zip-lock bag which can be provided at exam venues.

Hats

You may wear hats and other head coverings during the exam. However, these items must be inspected by an exam supervisor before the exam starts. If you are wearing clothing of any kind that obscures your face or your ears, you may be asked to remove that clothing for inspection in private and before an exam supervisor of the same gender. It is your responsibility to make sure you allow enough time to do this before your exam starts.
