Translation dictionaries in exams

Summer Session 2011/2012

University policy currently allows for NESB (non-English speaking background) students to use foreign language translation dictionaries in their exams.

If you meet this criteria, you may apply for the authorisation code 'TD' to be printed on your student ID card. This will allow you to use a translation dictionary - not an English dictionary - in any Summer Session 2011/2012 supplementary exam.

Your dictionary must be in printed not electronic form, and must contain no notes. It is your responsibility to make sure there are no notes in the dictionary you use, even if you have borrowed one from another person.

Change of policy in 2012

After Summer Session, the University will change its policy regarding translation dictionaries, and no student will be allowed to access a foreign language translation dictionary in their exams.

The 'TD' code on your student ID card will no longer allow you to bring a translation dictionary to your exams.

This decision has been made after careful consideration of the needs of all students in exams.

We understand that some international students might be concerned about not having access to a translation dictionary in exams. However, there are some things you can do now to help you feel prepared. UOW provides a range of support services and workshops for international students who'd like to improve their English language skills. Visit the International Student Programs and Learning Development websites for details on English for Academic Purposes workshops, English conversation groups, and other ways to improve English skills.
