Calculators
If you are permitted to use a calculator in your exam, this will be indicated on the exam timetable.
From 2012 you will need to have your calculator approved for use in all UOW exams.
Calculators will be approved if they meet the eligibility criteria and have been marked for use with the University's 'approved calculator' label.
Approved calculators
Calculators will only be approved for use in exams if they meet the eligibility criteria modelled on that of the NSW Board of Studies.
A Central Register contains a list of all assessed calculator models and whether or not they meet the above criteria.
Eligible calculator models - these models DO meet the criteria and WILL be approved
Ineligible calculator models - these models DO NOT meet the criteria and WILL NOT be approved
You must have your calculator labelled as an 'approved calculator' before using it in any exam at UOW. Calculators without the 'approved calculator' label cannot be taken into any exam, and if found, will be confiscated for the duration of the exam. Exam supervisors do not carry spare calculators for student use, and students are not permitted to borrow calculators from other students during the exam.
Labels cannot be removed and placed onto another calculator.
Your calculator model not on the list?
If your calculator does not appear on the list of eligible calculators, check the features of your calculator against the eligibility criteria.
You can apply online if you would like your calculator to be assessed as an eligible model. Please provide as much information as possible about your calculator including links to documentation hosted on official websites (e.g. manufacturer or reputable retailer websites).
We will need to have your application by the following dates to make sure you're prepared for exams:
- 25 May for Autumn Session
- 16 July for Trimester 2
Label distribution sites
If you buy an eligible calculator from the UniShop on the Wollongong campus, you can have it labelled at the time of purchase.
Or, if you already own a calculator, you can now have it labelled at one of the following places:
- Student Central, Building 17, Wollongong Campus
- UniShop, Building 11, Wollongong Campus
- Faculty of Informatics Student Enquiry Centre, Building 3, Wollongong Campus
- SBS Administration, Innovation Campus
- SBS Administration, Sydney
- Batemans Bay Campus Administration
- Bega Campus Administration
- Shoalhaven Campus Administration
- Southern Highlands Campus Administration
- Southern Sydney Campus Administration
Make sure that you do this as early as possible to avoid queues later in session and the risk of not having a calculator in your exam.
Distance students at remote venues
If you are sitting your exams in a remote venue, you do not need to have your calculator labelled. Your exam supervisor will check at the beginning of the exam that your calculator model is listed as an eligible model.
Don't get caught without a calculator in your exam!
All calculators in exams must now display an APPROVED label.
Labels are NOW AVAILABLE from the UniShop, Student Central and the Faculty of Informatics Student Enquiry Centre.
Look out for us at the Market Stalls - next one Wednesday 30 May.
