Supplementary Exams

If you believe that your performance in an exam has been affected by illness or other causes beyond your control, you can apply for academic consideration in Student Online Services (SOLS). In some circumstances you may wish to apply for a supplementary exam in addition to or instead of the final exam.

Students studying with the Graduate School of Business should contact the School directly for more information about supplementary exams.

 How to Apply

You can apply for a supplementary exam by submitting an academic consideration application in Student Online Services (SOLS). Complete Part D - Nature of Assistance Sought with a request for a supplementary exam for each relevant subject. Your application must be submitted within three (3) working days of the final exam for the subject together with documented evidence supporting your application.

Students who sit for supplementary exam(s) should note that they will not be able to graduate in the ceremonies immediately following their final session of study, since final subject results will not have been finalised in time.

 Correspondence

Your subject coordinator will reply to you by SOLS mail within five (5) working days of receiving your application to advise whether your application has been approved. If your application has been approved you will be eligible to sit a supplementary exam. In some circumstances your subject coordinator may decide to make the arrangements for your exam themselves, and will respond to you with details of the exam date, time and venue. In most cases the subject coordinator will forward your details to the Academic Registrar's Division (ARD) to register you to sit your exams during the University's supplementary exam period.

 Timetables

Your personalised provisional exam timetable will be released on SOLS approximately one week before the supplementary exam period begins (check specific dates in the table provided above), with details of the date and time of your exam(s). A SOLS mail will be sent to all registered students to advise that the provisional timetable is available. If you believe that your supplementary exam has been approved, and your details do not appear in your personalised exam timetable, you should contact the Exams Team immediately.

In the week prior to the supplementary exam period, the final exam timetable will be released and you will be able to view exam venue details.

 Non-attendance in exams

If you are unable to attend your supplementary exam at the scheduled time as a result of illness or other circumstances beyond your control, you should notify your subject coordinator that you will not be attending your exam.

In most cases the subject coordinator will not grant you a rescheduled supplementary exam.

It will not be possible to lodge a special consideration application on SOLS since the session will be closed. If you have documentary evidence to support your non-attendance in the supplementary exam you should forward this directly to the subject coordinator with a written explanation. Your subject coordinator may, with this evidence, take into account the circumstances of your non-attendance at the final and supplementary exams when your final marks are awarded.

 Results

Students who have been registered to sit a supplementary exam will generally have their final subject results for the relevant subjects withheld, showing the code 'WH' - withheld.

Subject results will be withheld until the subject coordinator has completed marking the supplementary exam papers and submitted the new mark and grade for release. Students should note that there is no official release date for supplementary results. The result release process for supplementary exam papers can take up to three weeks after the supplementary exam period. Once the process is complete the new mark and grade will be available on SOLS. Students who are concerned that there has been a delay beyond three weeks should contact their subject coordinator in the first instance. Student Central can also assist with enquiries regarding release of subject results.
