ITS Notification: Trojan Computer Virus

A new Trojan computer virus is currently being propagated on the UOW network. At this stage the infection appears to be limited to devices running the Windows operating system.

The primary mode of transmission is via USB-connected memory-devices such as thumb-drives, memory sticks, USB-connected hard disks. The infection is not carried via email.

Initial discussions with the vendor indicate that this infection is not considered to be malicious, but is more an annoyance in that it installs executable programs and propagates itself.

The University's central anti-virus software, McAfee, recognises that a virus is present, but currently doesn't cleanse the machine. ITS is working with McAfee to provide a cleaning solution, which will include ongoing protection from this particular virus.

Until complete protection is available our advice is, where possible, avoid using attached memory devices on computers that may have the infection. You will only know this if your anti-virus software has informed you.

Further information will be provided to the UOW community as soon as a solution has been provided by the Vendor.
