Introduction to PIP

The University of Wollongong began their Business Intelligence journey in 1999 with the initial implementation of OLAP cubes over their financial and human resource data.

Their Business Intelligence implementation now covers 7 key perspectives of the University’s performance including:

  1.  Students, Teaching and Learning
  2.  Business Process and Operations
  3.  Finance
  4.  Staff and Workplace Satisfaction
  5.  Research
  6.  Environmental Sustainability
  7.  Community and International Focus

A Business intelligence competency centre known as the Performance Indicators Unit was established in 2006 with the goal of developing an analytic culture throughout the organisation. This culture is designed to make data driven decision making and information analysis and embedded or business as usual activity for the University.

An Analytic culture is developed through the interaction between the technological implementation and how its use is integrated into the organisation.

Some key aspects to determining the success of this are:

Business Intelligence Technology Diffusion: Measure of whether the technology is used broadly across the organisational. This is measured through the number of people and business units who have adopted the reporting and analysis on offer. This is critical in aiming for standardisation of numbers and determines the breadth of culture development

Analysis and Reporting: Is the process of integrating analysis of information to ensure it becomes a stable and regular part of procedures, processes and employee behaviours. When this is achieved analysing information to improve decision making becomes part of an individuals business as usual activity

Business Intelligence User Adoption: The volume of users who rely on the technology

Business Intelligence Infusion: A measure of the breadth of products feature use. In other words that product features are used in a best fit way for what they are intended and that the level of use increases in sophistication. This considers the ease and efficiency of access and whether the information contained supports the organisations decision making objectives
