Welcome to the Faculty of Science

This Faculty comprises the Schools of:

This is a research-intensive Faculty – one of the strongest in Australia. We have 47 academic staff, over 50 specialist research staff supported on external grants, and more than 130 PhD and Masters research students.

Our international-level research strengths are mostly based in six ‘flagship’ research groups:

A distinctive feature of the UOW Faculty of Science is the close connection between forefront research in each of our areas and undergraduate teaching. The forefront of research informs our teaching because our top researchers also lecture and conduct practical classes and our postgraduate research students are also involved extensively. Our best students do independent research as part of their degrees, sometimes with our collaborators at overseas Universities.

Jane Wasley (l) and Johanna Turnbull, students of Associate Professor Sharon Robinson in the Biology Department, work on moss in Antarctica.

At Postgraduate level we offer:

The Faculty is actively involved in the promotion of science in schools and in the wider community, through the annual Siemens Science Experience for Year 9-10 students, and the Illawarra Coal Regional Science Fair.
