Fig 1: Scanning probe microscope image of 10 nm high ripples formed on a 200,000 molecular weight polystyrene surface by a single sliding pass of a smooth spherical indenter. The ripples are perpendicular to the sliding direction.

Fig 2: Friction induced ripples form on polystyrene surfaces over the same range of crosslink densities that crazes are observed to form under uni-axial tension.
