Centre for Medicinal Chemistry

About The CMCP

Overview

The Centre for Medicinal Chemistry (CMC) was established in November 2006 and involves 12 academic staff and 10 additional post-doctoral researchers. This research centre endeavours to enhance the understanding of the molecular origins of disease and undertake modern drug design, leading to the development of new pharmaceuticals. The three major disease states currently being targeted by the CMC are: anti-infectives, encompassing antibacterial agents, including multi-drug resistant strains, anti-viral agents (e.g. HIV, Dengue fever, hepatitis C, anti-fungals) and anti-malarial agents; anti-cancer agents, incorporating both drug design and development as well as formulation and clinical aspects; and cardio-vascular disease, including fundamental research associated with phospholipids and diet as well as the development of new small molecule therapeutics. The director of the CMCP is Assoc. Prof. Paul Keller.

Members

The CMC comprises 12 academic staff members with extensive proficiency in both the chemical and health sciences; as well as a large number of post-doctoral fellows and post graduate students. The researchers within the CMC boast strong collaborations with other complimentary institutes, and is an integral and vital component of the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute. For additional information on researchers within the CMC please access the Members webpage.

Research

The CMC is a medically focused research group investigating a diverse range of disease states with aims of developing new pharmaceutical agents targeting novel molecular mechanisms. Current research is specifically targeting a number of infectious diseases, cardiovascular disease and the development of anti-cancer agents. For additional information on research being undertaken within the CMC please access the Research webpage.
