About CMBThe Centre for Medical Bioscience brings together a multidisciplinary team of chemists and biologists from the Department of Chemistry and the School of Biological Sciences, with exciting research programs focused in three key areas: anti-microbial agents (e.g. targeted at new anti-bacterials), age-related diseases (cataract; neurodegenerative disease), and cancer (new therapeutics for breast and prostate cancer). These programs are underpinned by basic science directed towards the discovery and structural characterization of biological targets. The long term goals are to develop new drug leads to address problems of drug resistance in infectious disease and to tackle in a new and more effective way diseases associated with ageing. We are closely aligned with the Centre for Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology at this same University, giving us access to complementary expertise in drug design and synthesis. We are a regional centre of expertise in biotechnology, close by the biotechnology hub in Sydney. We have 9 team leaders, 10 Research Fellows and 25 postgraduate research students associated with Centre projects. We actively foster exciting inter-disciplinary projects and provide a supportive environment for such research. We hope in the longer term to help provide insights into how to tackle major contemporary disease problems, such as cancer, cataract, and diseases of aging.
