Congratulations to Associate Professor Gordon Waitt from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences who was recently awarded the Macdonald Holmes Medal.  This medal is presented biennially by The Geographical Society of New South Wales and The Geography Teachers Association of New South Wales to a person deemed to have made a distinguished contribution in the field of geographical education in Australia.

Fresh evidence from Flores sheds light on ‘Hobbit’ origins

A new discovery of stone tools on Flores, Indonesia, has revealed that humans colonised the island much earlier than previously thought, opening the door to controversial theories about the origin of Homo floresiensis – nicknamed the ‘Hobbit’.  Previous research by a joint Indonesian-Australian team in the Soa Basin of Flores in 2001 unearthed stone tools in ancient deposits dated to 880,000 years ago. This appeared to provide a maximum age for the arrival on the island of the ancestors of Homo floresiensis.  Read more...
