Fellow scientists
Whether you're working in a team with a number of researchers, or on a relatively independent project, it is important to cultivate relationships with fellow scientists other than your supervisor. You will make the most of being part of the academic community if you are an active participant in the formal and informal discussions available.
Take this opportunity to seek out relevant conferences and workshops that will expose you to the broader scientific community. You may not be ready to give a presentation yourself - at least until the end of the year - but you can learn a lot about the latest results and approaches. Conferences are also useful places to explore ongoing opportunities, such as postgraduate research.
