Josh LARSEN
My PhD is on the Quaternary changes in hydrology in the Lake Eyre Basin, particularly in the Strzelecki desert. I am also studying the contemporary hydrological cycle of some of the rivers and lakes in this basin. This research involves extensive stratigraphic and chronological analysis (OSL and TL) of aeolian, fluvial, and lacustrine sediments, water balance and catchment modelling, and lots of ground and surface water chemistry.
My supervisors are Gerald Nanson and Brian Jones (UOW) and Dioni Cendon (ANSTO). The Quaternary aspect of the work is carried out at UOW, while the hydrology and geochemistry is funded by, and conducted at the Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation (ANSTO).
Research Interests
• Quaternary Studies and Geomorphology: evolution of aeolian, fluvial and lacustrine landforms, particularly in drylands
• Geochemistry: Ground and surface water, sediment, soil, and basalt geochemistry and isotopic analysis.
• Biogeochemistry: soil and plant interactions, application of carbon and nitrogen isotopes to soil organic matter, carbon budgets for Australian and Patagonian ecosystems.
