Drilling and Coring Equipment
The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences has a range of drilling and coring equipment which is used for research projects throughout Australia A major item is a truck-mounted H210D drilling rig. The drill is equipped with solid augers to enable augering into unconsolidated sediments to a depth of around 30 metres. There is also a hollow auger system, which with thin-walled samplers allows recovery of undisturbed core from depths of up to 20 metres in clays and silts. A diamond triple barrel coring system allows hard rock coring, and has been used in coral reef environments. The drill is operated by Brent Peterson, Technical Officer, and provides support for the investigations of the GeoQuEST Research Centre.
