Research Summary (<50 words)
Early Precambrian crustal evolution, terrestrial differentiation and emerging life environments and feedbacks on early climate (>3500 million years ago). This is undertaken via integrated field studies (including geological mapping), geochemistry and zircon U-Pb geochronology. Main focus for research is Greenland.
Possible future Honours student topics
Available late-2011: Participation in a new mineral-chemical appraisal of the world’s oldest sediments from Greenland. The main focus would be on the mineralogical textures in banded iron formations. However, involvement in some SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology might be possible. No fieldwork is planned for participating student.
Available late-2011: Evolution of Eastern Australia and associated mineralisation via integrated field work, petrographic studies and SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology (jointly with Dr. Sol Buckman).

Additional research information (long version)
Dr. Nutman has the world’s longest, broadest experience working on Earth’s earliest rock record (Greenland, Labrador, China and Western Australia). His relevant skills are to obtain integrated data to unravel crustal history with (i) his own mapping, petrology and whole rock geochemistry (>30 years), (ii) SHRIMP zircon dating of igneous and metamorphic events (>20 years), and (iii) intra-zircon inclusion studies and trace element chemistry (5 years). Early career highlights are (i) showing (pre-SHRIMP geochronology) the lithological and temporal diversity of the oldest orthogneisses (e.g. Nutman et al., Contrib. Mineral. Petrol, 1984; Baadsgaard et al., Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta., 1986), (ii) that the Isua Supracrustal Belt of Greenland (the world’s largest body of >3700 Ma meta-volcanic and sedimentary rocks) contained coherent lithological units that could be mapped-out, albeit disrupted by early tectonic breaks (Nutman et al., Precamb. Res., 1984), and (iii) the documentation of early Archaean granulite facies metamorphism in relatively thick crust (Griffin et al,. Earth Planet. Sci., 1980).
After Nutman joined the ANU SHRIMP group his early Earth contributions continued, with (i) showing episodic crustal growth in the early Archaean (Nutman et al., Geology, 1993 and onwards), and (ii) that the Isua supracrustal belt contains unrelated volcano-sedimentary sequences of different age and origin in early Archaean tectonic contact (Nutman et al., Chem. Geol. 1997 and onwards). This is particularly important for establishing the timeline for early-life and terrestrial environmental studies. Under the auspices of DP0342798 this was the flavour of further research, with (i) refuting of the graphite-within-apatite chemofossil (Nutman and Friend, Precamb. Res., 2006) and (ii) demonstrating the importance of “marine’ carbonates in the earliest sedimentary record (Friend et al. Contrib. Min. Pet., 2007). Whilst at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences Dr. Nutman, with Chinese colleagues made significant advance in expanding and interpreting the early Archaean terranes of North China Craton.
Current work includes using novel geochemical approaches applied to early Archaean metasedimentary rocks to test independently proposals of early (>3600 Ma) life (Nutman et al., 2010). Increased emphasis in recently initiated research will be a better constraint on early atmospheric composition and climate. This will use detailed studies of recently recognised ≥3700 Ma unconformities with weathering beneath them, details studies of the mineralogy and textures of the oldest banded iron formations, plus integrating whole rock and igneous zircon O-isotope data, to deconvolve deep-seated magmatic effects from surficial weathering and alteration effects. Broader terrestrial studies are continuing, particularly in collaboration with Dr. V. Bennett (ANU), such as integrated 142Nd and 143Nd studies showing that silicate Earth underwent major fractionation in its first 50 million years (Bennett et al., Science, 2007).
