Waste management in Australia and the Pacific Islands

Waste management is a key environmental issue for many countries and particularly for small island communities with limited land areas. Research in this area has focussed on methods for assessing the types, sources and quantities of wastes (Storrs et al, 1996; Morrison and Munro, 1999), including hazardous wastes (Brodie and Morrison, 1984; Morrison et al, 1996) and on developing possible technologies for reducing the amounts of waste produced. Reuse of wastes and the treatment of waste to provide a useable resource have also been investigated (Dixon et al, 1996; Pickup et al, 2000), with appropriate technologies being developed for on-site assessment. Several projects have led to the development of national waste management policies and plans for Pacific Island countries, with the intention of having these funded as part of major aid programs.
