Water quality impacts on small island ecosystems

Image

Water resources are a growing concern in all countries around the world, but they are of critical importance in small island countries where freshwater supplies may often be in short supply. Work in this area has focussed on assessment of water resources quality, with an emphasis on both freshwater and nearshore water resources as they often provide a significant component of local food supplies. Investigations have looked at the impacts of contaminants such as metals (Morrison and Brown, 2003; Denton et al, 2005; Peshut et al, 2008) and organic chemicals (Morrison et al, 1996b), but the impact of poor hygiene and sewage operations has also been widely studied (e.g., Morrison et al, 1996a). Impacts of land use changes on the quality of water supplies has also been a major area of investigation (Morrison et al, 1990; Baines and Morrison, 1990)
