GIS for cultural research – integrating GIS techniques with qualitative methods
I am currently in the final year of my PhD entitled: ‘Creative city mapping: exploring GIS for cultural planning and auditing’. I am investigating the use of mental maps and GIS to bridge between qualitative interview data and quantitative measures of the creative city. Outputs generated for this thesis are being used to better understand the spatial proclivities of Darwin’s creative workforce.
Research Assistance
ARC Linkage grant: “Creative Tropical City: mapping Darwin’s creative industries” 2007-2009
My role was to carry out a baseline and historical mapping analysis of Darwin’s creative industries, based on census data. Further work involved design and implementation of a methodology for integrating qualitative map data. Results can be accessed in the project report:

A 3D visualisation of qualitative data can be viewed here:

ARC Discovery grant: “Reinventing rural places? The extent and impact of festivals as regeneration strategies” 2004-2008
My tasks included managing the development of a festivals database; survey design and mailout; fieldwork and data analysis. Further information about the project can be accessed here:

Current Research Projects
GIS Mapping Technologies in Cultural Research: A Pilot Study Charting Spatialised Understandings of Inequality Across Different Parts of Adelaide
Susan Luckman (UniSA), Chris Gibson and Chris Brennan-Horley
This project builds upon the use of mental maps and GIS utilised in the Creative Tropical City Project (LP0667445). It will test the use of two kinds of mobile devices—mobile palm-held and interactive digital tablets—for both their usability and productive impact upon the conduct of location-based research interviews and surveys.
