Water Quality Symposium 7/8 June 2007
Water quality information is a critical indicator of environmental change, as many changes have an impact on the biological, chemical or physical properties of water. Such information is important for assessing the likely health status of humans and their surrounding ecological communities, and for determining the impacts of past developmental activities and predicting likely impacts of new developments. Given the rapid changes occurring and proposed for this region, a meeting to consider the collection, storage, collation, assessment and dissemination of water quality information appears to be a high priority for environmental management in the region. In recent years, given the existing drought conditions, great concern has been expressed about the quantity of available water, and as a result, significant activities have been initiated to utilize or to examine the potential use of groundwater resources. In addition, the possible impact of longwall mining subsidence on water availability and quality has been a concern. The impacts of the current and proposed uses of groundwater on water quality and availability in the region have not been widely discussed, and thus a special session at the symposium will consider this issue. This symposium is being sponsored by the GeoQuEST Research Centre, Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority, PB (Parsons Brinckerhoff) Australia, and Illawarra Coal.
