Faculty of Science

Faculty of Science Conference and International Travel Grants

This scheme is primarily intended to provide supplementary funding for higher degree research (HDR) students (excluding Honours) and other Early Career Researchers (ECRs, e.g. postdoctoral fellows) in Science to (i) give presentations (oral or poster) at high profile national and international conferences, and/or (ii) conduct research with a strong researcher or research group at an overseas institution.

Applications will be accepted at any time by the Associate Dean (Research) and jointly assessed by the Associate Dean (Research) and the Dean. There is a maximum budget of $60,000 per annum for this scheme, and more than 200 HDR students in the Science Faculty.

Only two applications will be accepted from individual HDR students during their candidature, and the cumulative total funding awarded to an individual student will not exceed $3000. Applications to support oral presentations at an international conference may attract a maximum award of $3000. However, the maximum support awarded is limited to $1000 for oral or poster presentations at national conferences, or poster presentations at international conferences. Note: No retrospective applications will be accepted (i.e. you cannot attend the conference etc. and apply for support after the event). Any funds granted will be contingent upon the provision of receipts for expenses (note: Tax Invoices are not sufficient, you must provide receipts).

Applications will also be considered from academic staff in Science, but in these cases strong justification will have to be provided for why the academic is unable to meet these costs from other funding sources.

Written applications should briefly address the following criteria (usually in no more than 1 page). Please use the criteria shown below as section headings in your application:

• Details of the conference (field of research, conference title, date, location, approximate number of people attending, title of your presentation), and/or the overseas research group where the planned research is to be conducted and the nature of the research.

• Case for how presenting at this conference and/or undertaking the planned research overseas will benefit you and particularly the UOW Science Faculty.

• Details of anticipated expenses to be incurred in attending the conference and/or undertaking the planned research overseas (registration, airfares, accommodation, etc.).

• The level of funding you are applying for.

• In the case of HDR students and other ECRs, provide a breakdown of any and all other sources of funding to support your trip (including why your supervisor cannot support you, if that is the case).

• In the case of a Science academic applying for funding, please also provide explicit justification of why you are unable to obtain sufficient funding from other sources.

Contact the Associate Dean (Research) or the Dean for further information if required. Please email written applications to the Associate Dean Research, Prof Mark Wilson (email: mrw@uow.edu.au). If you do not receive acknowledgement of receipt of your application within 72 hours, try again (emails occasionally get lost in transmission).
