Postgraduate Information

Research Areas

The School has active research programs in both pure and applied chemistry. These programs are concentrated into four partly overlapping areas:

  • Bio-organic/Medicinal Chemistry
  • Structure Determination of Biomolecules
  • Advanced Intelligent Polymers
  • Environmental Chemistry

These programs make extensive use of the School's analytical expertise and equipment. The School also has an active research program in the area of chemical.

PhD Program

There are currently over 50 PhD students enrolled in the School. A number of these students are working on projects in partnership with industry. The School has a strong commitment to industry-relevant research and has established close and expanding interactions (including both consultancies and industry-financed research projects) with a range of industrial and governmental organisations such as AMRAD, ANSTO, BHP, Cochlear, Glaxo, Johnson and Johnson, CSIRO and Rio Tinto.

There is a high degree of collaboration between the School and others within the University of Wollongong with joint supervision of projects spanning, more than one area of chemistry or chemistry and biology, biomedical science or environmental science.

Masters Program

The School offers a choice of Master's Programs in both Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. These studies can be taken as coursework Masters or Research degrees. The Research Master degrees are a 72 credit point program and provide for an additional one-year full time research project (48 credit points) on completion of the coursework component (24 credit points).

Facilities

The School has modern equipment and facilities for research and teaching. Particularly important are state-of-the-art facilities in mass spectrometry (including high resolution electrospray, LC/MS, GCMS and MALDI ), NMR spectroscopy (300 MHz, 500 MHz and access to both an 800 MHZ Brucker Spectrometer at ANU and an 600 MHz at UNSW), an electrochemical surface mapping facility, FTIR spectroscopy, various CD UV-vis spectrometers and an extensive range of other analytical equipment. The School also has strong capabilities in computer-aided molecular modelling. More extensive details may be found on the facilities page.
