EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY

Our research into the evolutionary biology of both plants and animals occurs within several research programs and involves many ICB members.

Research spans fundamental investigations in areas including:

  • forensic entomology - phylogenetics of carrion feeding blowflies (Wallman)
  • phylogeography of intertidal invertebrates (Minchinton, Ayre)
  • population genetics ( Ayre, Madsen, Olsson , Sherman),
  • studies of sexual selection in reptiles, amphibians (Olsson) and birds (Buttemer, Astheimer)
  • endogenous heat production in flowering plants (Robinson),
  • adaptation to elevated UV levels in Antarctic Mosses (Robinson) and Intertidal invertebrates ( Davis).

Applied topics include

  • aspects of conservation genetics and genetic rescue in reptiles (Madsen and Olsson) and plants and
  • use of population genetics to evaluate and design marine and terrestrial reserves (Ayre, Minchinton).
