Surfing the green wave - clean energy from ocean waves and currents
A/Prof Paul Cooper
School of Mechanical, Materials and Mechatronic Engineering, UOW
Wednesday 20th May | 5:30-6:30 pm
At the Five Islands Brewery - All Welcome!
Renewable energy from our oceans could provide a potentially significant amount of electricity in the future. We have the opportunity to harvest this resource from both the surface of the ocean, from waves, and below the surface, from tidal currents and other phenomena. Interest in Marine Energy Generation Systems has increased rapidly over the past few years, particularly with a new focus on harnessing the power of tidal streams using Marine Current Turbines – which are the equivalent of underwater wind turbines. This presentation will highlight some of the very recent developments in this field, such as the Marine Current turbine demonstration plants that have been installed by OpenHydro Ltd and Marine Current Turbines in Europe.
Recent progress on Wave Energy Conversion (WEC) systems will also be included, particularly Wollongong’s own wave energy demonstration project by local company, Oceanlinx. Examples of the latest developments overseas such as the recently commissioned Pelamis Wave Farm in Portugal will also be discussed.
A/Prof Paul Cooper is the Head of the School of Mechanical, Materials and Mechatronic Engineering, University of Wollongong. His research interests include Ocean Wave Energy systems and small scale wind energy conversion. He is also actively involved in the study of the fundamental aspects of natural ventilation in buildings, industrial ventilation systems and flow issues in pipelines.
Duration: 0:23. Pelamis Wave Power is the manufacturer of the Pelamis Wave Energy Converter -- a unique system to generate renewable electricity from ocean waves.
