"Emotional Intelligence" (J. Ciarrochi) and
"The Fear of Driving" (F. Deane)
Wednesday 10th August 2005, at 5:30 pm at Five Islands Brewery
Dr Joseph Ciarrochi will be speaking on Emotional Intelligence (EI) - Is this the key to getting along with others? "One thing is striking about human beings: In the absence of any observable threat or external privation, we behave badly towards each other, perhaps more so than any other animal behaves towards its own kind. Wherever you find more than one human gathered together for any period of time, you might observe many forms of aversive interpersonal behaviour, including verbal abuse, name calling, back stabbing, rudeness, ridicule, teasing, ostracism, emotional withholding, and bullying. This talk will briefly present a theory about why humans treat each other so badly and will illustrate how an EI-intervention may help people learn to get along. The talk will be interactive and will involve several brief exercises with the audience."
Professor Frank Deane will present his theories on the "Fear of Driving", an area of research which, to date, has not been widely investigated. A personal perspective from someone who has recently overcome her fear of driving will also be presented.
Whilst there is considerable research regarding individuals who have developed fears following serious motor vehicle accidents (MVA) there is little information regarding the development of driving fears from other acquisition pathways. The presentation will report the results of a series of studies on individuals who report driving fears, how their fear has developed and whether their fear acquisition pathways remain stable over time.
