River Health and Management: A Local Case Study (Kangaroo River)
Wednesday 8th June 2005, at 5:30 pm at Five Islands Brewery
Carla Mooney (from the Faculty of Law – UOW) has completed her PhD investigating the administrative arrangements for river health in the Kangaroo River. Her talk will touch on:
- the effectiveness of the integration of water and land use planning;
- community engagement in decision-making processes;
- how multiple uses and pressures are considered; and
- emerging and existing legal approaches to natural resource management for the area.
Paul Formosa (pictured below with Carla), the Natural Areas Coordinator for Wollongong City Council will introduce Carla Mooney and also provide discussion on how communities have made a difference in environmental management and how they can shape their own environmnetal values on various levels such as policy and governance, urban planning, volunteering and activism. Often we see community participation as a response to a common definition of problems and /or the provision of institutional arrangements and programs. Community based environmental restoration projects are an example of how participation requiring flexibility, information, and inclusiveness can shape environmental values
Interactive / Open Discussion Session: Rights and Responsibilities - The roles of community in changing environmental values…Your opinion is welcomed.
