Business Standards: a Turnoff for Small Enterprises?
Wednesday 15th September 2004, at 5:30 pm at Five
Islands Brewery
As you know, business standards cover a broad range of issues, from complaints handling;
OH&S; risk management; conflict at work; market research; to corporate social
responsibility. These standards are designed to help Australian businesses to perform
effectively in highly competitive markets—but how applicable are they to small
business and are they a help or a hindrance?
Associate Professor Helen Hasan from the Faculty
of Commerce and Mr James Thompson from the SME Committee of the Management and
Business Division of Standards Australia
will discuss the relevance of Australian Business Standards for SMEs. In the process
they will hopefully alleviate any fear on the part of SME managers that Standards
Australia is trying to bring more regulation to the SME sector. It is already weighed
down with mountains of regulatory paperwork! Together we may be able to shed some
light on the various characteristics that distinguish SMEs from the big end of town.
We want to look for ways that the business knowledge held in Standard's IP could be
useful to some, if not all SMEs, in various ways.
