Project Title:
Development of novel, potent and selective CDK2 enzyme inhibitors as potential anti-cancer therapeutic cancer agents.
Project Summary:
The aims of this project are to design and synthesise some novel and selective inhibitors of the CDK2 enyme and test them as potential anticancer agents. The more potent compounds will then be modified and developed further as more active and selective anti-cancer drugs. The research should make significant scientific contributions to drug design and synthesis and aid in the understanding of the mechanism of inhibition of cancer growth and cell regulation. Furthermore, it is hoped that a new, selective and potent drug can be discovered that can enter clinical trials, in the future, as an anti-cancer therapeutic. This project will provide excellent training to Sarah Yong in a multidisciplinary environment and help develop important collaborative links in cancer research between UoW and laboratories in the USA and Europe.

Project Title:
Tyrindoleninone, a newly discovered marine cytotoxin as a novel anti-cancer agent and its potential for use in targeted cancer therapy.
Project Summary:
Despite current cancer treatments patients still die of secondary disease. We have discovered an efficient, novel marine cytotoxin (tyrindoleninone) that rapidly causes cancer cell death. We plan to synthesise pure tyrindoleninone and develop methods to stably link it to human protein PAI2 that we know specifically targets malignant cancer cells. This is significant as PAI2 would selectively deliver and concentrate the toxin within cancer cells and thus not harm normal cells. If successful, we will be in the position to apply for larger grants and/or approach commercial investors to further develop this innovative anti-cander therapeutic agent.
