PhD Scholarship Opportunity

A PhD Scholarship is offered to work with a multidisciplinary team from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Electromaterials Science and the Faculty of Informatics, supervised by Professor Gordon Wallace and Professor Philip Ogunbona. The successful applicant will work on a project focused on data mining and predictive modelling of data derived from utility and wearable monitors.

The successful applicant will have completed a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics and/or Applied Statistics. The PhD project will develop skills in the analysis of raw data derived from sophisticated utility monitors and wearable sensors. Predictive modelling will then be required to mine the data to identify the relevant content and extract patterns in the data that can be used to assist in providing care to members of the public.

The scholarship will be housed in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Electromaterials Science (ACES) on Innovation Campus at the University of Wollongong. ACES comprises six research organisations, whose common goal is to explore electromaterials and how they can be applied to the way we live. The Faculty of Informatics has a strong research focus in data mining, pattern recognition, machine learning and signal processing.

Professor Gordon Wallace is an ARC Laureate Fellow and Director of ACES. His research interests include organic conductors, nanomaterials and electrochemical probe methods of analysis and the use of these in the development of intelligent polymer systems. A current focus involves the use of these tools and materials in developing biocommunications from the molecular to skeletal domains in order to improve human performance via medical Bionics. Professor Philip Ogunbona is Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Director of the Advanced Multimedia Research Lab, ICT Research Institute. His research interest include, image and video processing, signal processing, pattern recognition and machine learning.

Applications for this position should be made in the following way: Interested applicants should send your CV and a one page highlight on your research background to Dr Bridget Munro. For further information about this scholarship, please contact Prof Gordon Wallace, Executive Research Director, on +61 2 4221 3127 or Prof Philip Ogunbona on +61 4221 5321.

Applications open 16 December 2011 and close 6 January 2012.
