Message from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)Dear Postgraduate Research Student, I am very pleased to welcome you to the University of Wollongong. Postgraduate research students are a very important part of the core business of a University, and of University life generally. The core business of a University is the creation, application, dissemination and integration of knowledge. The value of postgraduate students is that they, perhaps more than any other group, participate in all of these endeavours. It is at the postgraduate level where we have our training ground for research, where we sharpen natural curiosity into analytical skills, where we embed the values of critical enquiry and scholarship, and where we inculcate a culture of innovation. Postgraduate students are simultaneously an output of the higher education system and an input into the national innovation network. They are important to the University, and they are important to society. We therefore do our best to make postgraduate study a rewarding experience for all concerned. To this end, the University aims to provide a holistic and student-focused research training experience, with an integrated suite of policies and procedures covering all aspects of recruitment, enrolment, induction, supervision, support, examination, exit and follow up. Overall, it is the ethos of the University of Wollongong which I hope you will find most rewarding, and to which you will in turn make a valuable contribution. This is a “can do” University. We pride ourselves on not fitting any particular stereotype, on independent thinking, on looking ahead, and on being ahead. I am confident you will experience it as such. Work hard, and work well. With best wishes Professor Margaret Sheil Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)
