Emotional Journey

The research process is also a journey of emotions as you progress through various stages. The diagram below outlines the emotions coinciding with tasks.

Studies have found that many students suffer from “library anxiety”. (Mellon 1986). Students attributed their anxiety to not knowing what to do, how to begin, or where things were located. Some students believe that only they are incompetent. New technologies, equipment and unfamiliar buildings can contribute to these feelings. As shown in the diagram above, the emotions of uncertainty and confusion are part of the process which most researchers will experience. It is important to realise that you are neither alone nor incompetent.
