Oral Presentation Abstract Requirements
Abstracts will be chosen by a committee made up of UOW academic staff. Consult your supervisor if you are not sure how to prepare an abstract.
If you are interested in presenting at the conference you are required to lodge an abstract by Friday, 29 June 2007. Presentations are to be 12 minutes each plus 3 minutes question and answer. (5 minutes will be given between presentations to move between rooms).

All presenters must be registered to attend the conference.
Selection Criteria:
Abstracts will be reviewed by the committee and selected on the basis of:
- Accessibility and interest for a general audience (as little jargon as possible, well stated aims), as well as interest to industry and professionals in the area
- Contribution to the knowledge base of the research
- Maturity of research (research that is further along with demonstrable results will generally be given preference)
- Clarity of presentation
- Compliance with the recommended format
Abstract Format Guidelines
Word Limit
- Title of abstract should be no more than 20 words
- Abstracts should be between 150 and 300 words

Document Requirements
- Must have title page as outlined above
- Abstracts must be submitted in Word for Windows format
- 14 point for title, 12 point for text in Times New Roman
- Single spaced throughout
- Should not contain subheadings, underlines or bold type (other than in the heading)
- All margins are to be 3cm, justify left and right margins
- Page size – Type on 1 side of A4 (210x297mm or 8.27x11.7inches)
- Tables and figures will not be accepted in the abstract
- Do not use bullet-pointed or numbered lists within the abstract
- Abstracts should contain brief but complete statements
- Abstracts/final papers must be original compositions
- Use as little jargon as possible (write for general audience)
Language
Abstracts must be submitted in plain English.
References
Please limit to key references. They can be included in or at the end of the abstract
Authors
- For proposals with more than one author – only one person should submit the abstract. This person will be the contact for all correspondence concerning the abstract with the conference organiser.
- Write authors with surname first followed but initials. Do not place commas between the name, surname and initials. A comma should be used to separate authors except for the last where you should use “and” before the last name.
Author Biography
- A 50 word biography of the presenting author only must also be provided with the abstract submission
- Highlight the name of the expected presenter in bold type face
Acceptance of Abstracts/Closing Date
- Abstracts that do not adhere to the guidelines will be rejected.
- The committee may limit the number if presentations by any one person in order to give as many students as possible the opportunity to present.
- Abstracts received after 5pm on the closing date will not be accepted
Intellectual Property (IP issues)
Please ensure that your paper does not contain confidential information owned by a third party. Also, if you think that your research may have commercial outcomes, speak to your Manager of Innovation and Commercialisation for advice before submitting an abstract as making the information public may limit the ability to obtain a patent or commercialise your discovery.
Publishing Consent
By submitting an abstract authors and co-authors permit their abstracts to be published on the Internet.
