Three Minute Thesis Competition

PhD student in UOW’s Intelligent Polymer Research Institute, Cameron Ferris won the recent ‘Three Minute Thesis Final’ competition.

At a festive event held at the UniCentre Function Rooms, judges awarded Cameron’s three-minute pitch as the best with PhD Faculty of Education student Van Tran announced the runner-up and Faculty of Informatics PhD student, Jie Yang, announced as the ‘people’s choice’ winner.

Cameron’s talk was titled ‘Printed Patches for a Broken Heart’. Van Tran’s topic was: ‘They are to blame, not us: the authoritative voice in quality issues of postgraduate education in Vietnam’ while Jie Yang’s topic was ‘Can we help google search? Content-based image retrieval using compressed sensing’.
Cameron has previously appeared on the prime time national ABC 1 TV program, “The New Inventors” along with his supervisor, Dr Marc in het Panhuis.

An audience of about 130 people watched as 21 higher degree students presented a snapshot of their thesis studies.

Cameron will now automatically be entered into the National Trans-Tasman competition being held at the University of Queensland on Tuesday 21 September. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the Research Student Centre.

Cameron won $1,000 and Van Tran and Jie Yang both received $500.
