- These two UOW business ideas entries (ToughSkin and WarraPharm) were among seven finalists in the annual University of Queensland (UQ) Business School's annual Enterprize competition designed to assist start-up companies. >View press release.

Bridget Munro from the School of Health Sciences conducts Biomechanics Research, more specifically Applied Biomechanics Research - related to the human body. One of her research projects was focused on Hang Gliding injury and prevention. She recently won an award to use her research to work with football clubs in the UK. Blake Cochran is undergoing his PHD in Biology and currently works at the University of Wollongong as a Researcher. He has always been interested in what actually constitutes something which is alive. Molecular Biology and Cell Biology has allowed him to explore this area. Troy Lowe, a PhD student at the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute (IPRI), talks about fabricating micro-sized pH sensitive electrodes made from Iridium and using these to detect local pH changes near the surface of zinc and zinc alloy. This work is part of a larger project to understand corrosion mechanisms of metal coatings.

Alberto J. Granero, a PhD student from the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute (IPRI) talks on elastic conducting rubber-carbon nanotubes fibres/strings/composites. The aim of his project is to produce conducting strings or fibres that are biocompatible in order to be used in medical applications, for example implanting artificial body parts like muscles.

Hear Dr Pia Winberg being interviewed by Nick Rheinberger from ABC Radio Illawarra for the first Uni in the Brewery for 2009. Pia is the Director of the UOW’s Shoalhaven Marine and Freshwater Centre (SMFC). She spoke about Marine Protected Areas (or MPAs) with A/Prof. Andy Davis at the Five Islands Brewery on Wednesday 11th March.

Sharon has visited the Antarctic five times, to monitor the mosses growing there and to investigate the effects of climate change.
