“The fact must be faced that at present there is just not enough money being spent to produce an efficient and solvent hospital service” Sydney Morning Herald Editorial, June 29, 1957

This Sydney Morning Herald editorial was written over 50 years ago, but it could have been written last week.  Quite clearly, media coverage of the ‘crisis’ confronting the Australian health system is hardly something new!

Drawing on examples of research undertaken by the Centre for Health Service Development (CHSD) over the last 15 years, this seminar will explore how research can help solve real life problems facing the Australian health system.

The goal of the CHSD is not simply to do research.  The goal of the CHSD is to do research that can be used to improve the funding and delivery of health care.  Our ideas of improvement include achieving fairer access to services, improving continuity of care and basing management decisions on evidence.  These ideas drive our research themes and reflect the major concerns of both policy makers and consumers.  Examples of research based on these themes will be presented.
