Multimedia communication presents significant research challenges in two distinct domains:

(i) between the participants of a crowded virtual environment; and

(ii) between and within dispersed communities in desert Australia.

In this presentation, we will briefly describe the results of two projects conducted by the Emerging Networks and Applications Lab at the University of Wollongong. The first project is developing immersive multimedia communication capability for distributed virtual environments to allow natural human interaction and communication in virtual worlds.
The second project aims to provide high speed multimedia communication to desert communities without the need to roll out costly infrastructure. The working prototypes of both projects will also be demonstrated during the presentation.
