As a UOW Research Strength, Institute of Mathematics and Its Application (IMIA) has been engaged in high-quality research in mathematics. At the moment, both pure and applied mathematics are ranked by ERA as the “world standard”. In this talk, the beauty and power of mathematics will be demonstrated from three major areas in which the researchers in IMIA are working, namely, C*-Algebra, Financial Mathematics and Nanomechanics.

In the area of C*-algebras IMIA is famous for its world-leading research program in graph C*-algebras and related dynamics. Since their invention in 1997 by members of IMIA’s functional analysis group, Graph C*-algebras have been attracting the attention of researchers around the world — indeed more every year. We will give a brief and hopefully entertaining presentation describing what a graph C*-algebra is, what a C*-graph algebra does, and why they have caused such a stir.

In the area of financial mathematics, we shall show some of our recent research results in developing analytical and numerical solutions for various types of financial derivatives, based on different mathematical models ranging from the classical Black-Scholes model to modern stochastic volatility models.

In the area of Nanomechanics, we focus on the use of applied mathematical modelling techniques and continuum mechanical approach to study various problems in nanotechnology. In this presentation, we will particularly look at the modelling of nanostructures and their potential applications in nanomedicine, especially their use as carriers for targeted drug and gene delivery.
