Innovation Idol is an initiative of the Research and Innovation Division of the University of Wollongong (UOW). UOW Research Students from all disciplines were asked to submit innovative solutions to the Monday-itis Syndrome. Successful Innovation Idol applicants then presented their idea to an audience who, through popular vote, chose a set of finalists. The Finalists were then given an unknown object and a limited period of time to develop a creative explanation of what the “product” is, what it is used for and why people should invest in it.
Like Australian Idol, students’ performance in pitching their idea was “critiqued” by a panel of expert judges. The judges assessed the participants’ enthusiasm, uniqueness of concept, marketing strategy and proposed commercialisation pathway. However, the audience detremined the winner based on creativity, presentation skills and the “x-factor”.
This event showcased UOW research student’s capacity to not only develop an innovative solution to a hypothetical problem but also their ability to “pitch” their innovative idea. It was also an interactive, entertaining and fun avenue for presenting serious aspects of the innovation process.
