Donating to Cancer Research at UOW

Donating to Research

The University's Office of Community and Partnerships and the Research Services Office recently hosted a special Afternoon Tea on Thursday the 2nd June, 2005, at the University of Wollongong as a public thank you and an information session between Cancer Researchers and those people who have made donations to Cancer Research conducted at the University of Wollongong .

The purpose of this event was to report on the progress of Cancer Research made possible by the generous donations and bequests by members of Alumni, UoW's Rotaract, Rotary (Kiama and Minnamurra), Cancer Carers groups and other individuals. It was also an opportunity for researchers to thank the above members.

Professor Phil Clingan, an oncologist from the South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Area Health Service, and Professor John Bremner (UoW) briefly presented some recent research findings. Together, they have developed a new drug compound which is showing significant promise in animal experiments, and they hope to further develop this drug combination for use in humans.
The current animal experiments have been greatly assisted by the provision of a dedicated mouse cage (see right) made possible by generous donor support. If successful, the drug combination should greatly ease painful side effects on drug administration and be more effective in the treatment of certain cancers like colo-rectal cancer.
Professor Clingan is also an Honorary Senior Fellow in the Institute for Biomolecular Science, UoW, and has recently been appointed as a Clinical Professor in the Medical School at University of Wollongong .

Professor Anatoly Rosenfeld from the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics at the University of Wollongong also presented his work in the development of animal Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner instrumentation, for use in the diagnosis of cancer and brain functionality in patients. Funding for his research work will enable further development of this portable facility and the opportunity to take it to rural areas where access to PET facilities is difficult and expensive.

Qantas has promised support for the anti-cancer work through the provision of at least 12 air tickets (Wollongong-Melbourne) to Professor Clingan and other researchers, Dr Ranson and Dr Stutchbury, to support collaboration with Monash University on the further development of the cancer drug formulation work. Area Sales Manager for QantasLink, Jo Alker attended the afternoon tea to meet the researchers.

Other students, research assistants and colleagues working in cancer research also attended the afternoon tea and were available for questions and discussion. Guests enjoyed the opportunity to mingle and learn what researchers have been able to achieve with their donations.

Professor Leon Kane-Maguire closed the official proceedings with a short speech on the importance of donating to cutting-edge cancer research at the University of Wollongong.
