Legal ServicesOverviewLegal Services is a specialist unit designed to provide the University with advice and legal services for matters arising under the Commercial Research Policy. We work closely with the Research and Innovation Division (and within that, the Managers of Innovation and Commercialisation (MICs), Research Services Office and Commercial Research Unit) and with personnel in related roles in Finance. We are a key support for research and collaboration with industry partners. Legal Services also handles the University's statutory obligations arising under privacy and freedom of information laws. As such, Legal Services must be forwarded all subpoenas and other official requests for information as soon as possible. What does Legal Services do?
- Process and determine freedom of information applications
- Process all subpoenas, summons, warrants issued to the University
- Process and determine privacy complaints
- Provide advice and training on privacy issues
- Provide advice and training on intellectual property laws and contracts
- Provide advice on legal aspects of University insurance policies
- Provide advice on commercial legal matters
- More specifically, we draft, negotiate and arrange signature of the following:

- Consultancy contracts
- Expert witness contracts
- Collaboration agreements
- Memorandums of understanding
- Research contracts
- Post doctoral funding contracts
- Government funding contracts
- Other commercial contracts, such as equipment supply, clinical trials, commercialisation agreements and so on
- Offshore teaching contracts
- CRC and ARC structure advice
- Student Intellectual Property deeds for scholarships
- Student placement agreements
What does Legal Services not do!!We do not provide advice or legal services for the following:
- Personal legal matters
- Industrial relations, personnel or OHS matters
- Grievance procedures
- Student conduct matters
- Building and construction matters, including leasing.
- General legal research
- Governance and structure of the University.
